Beat the Summer Slide Through Play: Sports

Whether it's kicking a soccer ball, shooting hoops, swimming laps, or running around the backyard, sports are a fun way for children to stay active while learning valuable life skills. Every game is an opportunity to try new things, cheer on others, and celebrate both big wins and personal accomplishments.


Some sports are played as a team, teaching children how to work together toward a common goal, while others encourage personal growth and perseverance. No matter the sport, every child can discover the joy of moving their body, building confidence, and having fun.

This week, we're celebrating all things sports with playful activities that encourage movement, teamwork, mindfulness, and creativity. Whether your little athlete has a favorite sport or simply loves to play, this theme is a wonderful way to keep children active while learning through play.





This Week's Activities

This week's Sports lesson encourages children to move, imagine, and work together. Here are just a few of the activities included in the lesson:


🏈 Five Senses Mindfulness Children begin by slowing down and noticing the world around them before jumping into active play. This mindfulness activity encourages them to use all five senses to become present and ready for the fun ahead.


Playful Yoga & Movement Get everyone moving with a playful sun salutation, the featured Warrior 4 Pose inspired by throwing a pitch, and a game of catch while listening to Take Me Out to the Ball Game. These activities help build coordination, balance, and confidence through movement.


🏟️ Ball Field Sensory Bin Bring the excitement of game day to sensory play with a ball field-inspired sensory bin filled with green "grass" rice and miniature sports balls. It's a fun invitation for open-ended play and imaginative storytelling.


🙌 Sports Fan Hands Craft Children can decorate their own cheering hands to represent their favorite team or sport. Once they're finished, they'll have the perfect accessory for cheering on family, friends, or even themselves!


🤾 Catch and Pose This isn't your average game of catch! As children toss the ball back and forth, they'll move around the space between throws, keeping everyone active while practicing movement and coordination.


📚 Storytime & Meditation The lesson ends with a themed story followed by a calming guided meditation, giving children time to relax, reflect, and wind down after an active day of play.
