Beat the Summer Slide Through Play: Reptiles

From turtles and lizards to snakes and crocodiles, reptiles are some of the most fascinating animals children can learn about. Their unique scales, eggs and interesting ways of moving make them exciting to observe and explore.

Unlike mammals, reptiles rely on the warmth of the sun to help keep their bodies warm. They also shed their skin as they grow, making them very different from many of the animals children see every day. Learning about reptiles is a fun way to spark curiosity, encourage questions and discover more about the natural world.

This week, we're celebrating all things reptiles with playful activities that encourage movement, creativity, mindfulness and hands-on exploration. Whether your child already has a favorite reptile or is discovering these amazing animals for the first time, this theme is sure to inspire plenty of learning through play.

This Week's Activities

This week's Reptiles lesson encourages children to imagine, move and discover what makes these amazing animals so unique. Here are just a few of the activities included in the lesson:

🦎 Five Senses Mindfulness Children begin by slowing down and becoming aware of the world around them through their five senses. This calming activity helps them become present before diving into a day of reptile-themed adventures.

🐍 Playful Yoga & Movement Get little explorers moving with a playful sun salutation, the featured Lizard Pose, parachute play and the song Reptiles are Cool. These activities encourage children to stretch, move and pretend they're their favorite reptiles.

🥚 Hatching Reptiles Sensory Bin Children become reptile explorers as they dig through a sensory bin to uncover hidden eggs and help the baby reptiles "hatch." It's a fun way to spark imaginative play while learning that many reptiles hatch from eggs.

🎨 Turtle Finger Painting Using finger paint, paper plates and construction paper, children create their own colorful turtle craft. They'll enjoy getting creative while building fine motor skills and learning more about one of nature's most recognizable reptiles.

🪨 Magic Rocks Game Children begin curled up like little eggs before "hatching" into the reptile of their choice. Whether they slither like a snake or crawl like a turtle, this imaginative movement game encourages creativity and active play.

📚 Storytime & Meditation The lesson ends with a themed story followed by a calming guided meditation, giving children time to relax, reflect and think about everything they learned during their reptile adventure.
